Have you ever purchased a product online where you were convinced you had to have it?
Have you ever started reading an article or watching a video on a topic, only to have been so captivated you spent the next 45 minutes desperate to find out the secret to your success?
If you’ve answered yes to either of these questions, you probably want to know how you can have the same powerful and convincing marketing for your own business.
Welcome to the world of Copywriting.
What Does A Copywriter Do?
A copywriter has a deep understanding of buyer psychology and has the unique skill set to weave that knowledge into powerful and captivating words that sell.
What this means is they understand how to get into your customers head, and know exactly what triggers their decision-making process. Then translate that into words on a page that convert prospects into paying customers.
In simple terms, “Copywriters write words that sell stuff”.
But it goes much deeper than that…
A copywriter can help you:
- Find your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) so you can better differentiate your product from your competitors.
-
Identify and narrow down your customer avatar. So you know exactly who you are selling to and what their needs and wants are.
-
Dive deep into your business with a fresh pair of eyes and find new ways to market your product(s) and/or service(s).
-
Advise you on your overall marketing strategy and help you pinpoint the areas where you can maximize your return from your marketing budget.
-
Develop your offers and spot new opportunities in your business to create new ones.
-
Boost conversions on all your marketing materials by using powerful language and buyer psychology to effectively market your products without sounding like a used car salesman.
-
Advise you on what type of funnel is best for your business based on how you get traffic to your site (eg. paid ad traffic vs organic search traffic).
But Can’t I Just Write My Own Copy?
Of course. If your business isn’t generating much money and you’ve got plenty of time on your hands, then it might make sense to learn how to write your own copy.
There are courses like CopyHour which can teach you how to write killer copy. It takes a solid commitment of 1-2 hours per day, 6 days a week for three months. It consists of studying the best copy in the business by writing out (yes you heard me correctly) parts of and in some cases entire sales letters by hand.
You can also check out my list of books you should read if you want to really understand how buyer psychology works and how to be a better copywriter. (some of these books are rare and command thousands of dollars).
Then I recommend joining an exclusive copywriting community such as Copychief where you can have your copy critiqued and “chiefed” by some of the top copywriters in the industry.
I highly recommend if you have the time (and the inclination) to learn copywriting, that you do. It is an extremely valuable skill for any business owner.
However, if your skills lie elsewhere and you are already generating revenue for your business, then learning copywriting from the ground up probably doesn’t make sense for you.
It all comes down to opportunity cost. Should you really invest a ton of time in a skill you may only use a couple of times? Or are you better off leveraging your existing strengths and hiring someone who already has the necessary skills to fill the gap you have in your business?
Which brings us to the next question…
Should You Hire A Copywriter?
If your business depends on any kind of marketing in order to bring in sales then the answer is… YES. When you hire a copywriter you are hiring someone who lives and breathes sales copy and buyer psychology.
A great copywriter can weave convincing sales arguments into powerful and captivating stories that resonate with your target audience. Helping you increase conversions and generate more money for your business.
